The Leipzig ethnographic museum with its over 200.000 objects is one of the oldest and largest of its kind in Germany. "Collecting, Remembering" is a long term observational film of a museum’s daily activities during an important period: after 4 years of restoration in the museum’s building in Leipzig the collection is moving back. New exhibitions have to be prepared and ideas put into practise.
The film concentrates on a few protagonists; most of them have been working in the museum for many years. Through their eyes we experience the work which has to be done and the problems and conflicts during that period. Besides of the everyday activities questions are raised about the concept of collecting and the raison d’etre of ethnographic museums, about the origin of the objects, exhibition concepts, the building itself and aspects of the GDR past.
